Mount Shasta 14,180' - West Face Gully Route
Fri. May 23, 2014- After summiting Mount Lassen in the morning we drove to the City of Mount Shasta. We went to the grocery store for a few supplies and then went to the Fifth Season for a few more supplies and summit passes. Then we headed up to the Bunny Flat trailhead. We arrived at bunny flat 6800’ gathered our gear and packed up to Hidden Valley Base Camp. We arrived at base camp around 6 PM. The trail was mostly melted out and the hike took a little less than 2 hours. Snow was solid above 9,000' Hidden Valley Base camp is at 9,200'. We melted snow for water until after dark.
Saturday May 24th - We began our ascent at 5:15 AM. The snow was firm and our crampons were sticking great. West Face Gully is a nice direct route. It starts off steep in Hidden Valley about 45 degree and stays fairly steep all the way up to the ridge at 13,000'
Misery hill was partly melted out and had a trace of new snow. We reached the summit at 11:20 AM.
On our descent we stopped at about 13,000 and waited until one o'clock for the snow to soften up so that we could glissade. We glissaded all the way down to about 9,500'.
We stayed another night and packed out Sunday morning.
